Originally developed by competitive angler Devin Olsen, the DNA Worm is a smart upgrade from traditional soft-bodied worm patterns. Built from a stretchy, spandex-like material instead of squirmy rubber, it maintains its shape, moves naturally in the water, and holds up to more fish. If anyone calls it a junk fly, just tell them you’re fishing a deoxyribonucleic acid pattern that imitates Lumbricus terrestris and watch them nod like they understand.
Specs:
- Tied on a curved scud style hook
- Bead added for weight
- Two size #10 and two size #12 flies in the box
What we like about this fly:
We like the DNA Worm because it solves the problems most worm patterns have: durability. The material is tough enough to survive multiple fish, soft enough to move naturally, and textured enough to suggest segmentation without adding bulk. The bead helps it sink quickly, making it great for fast or deep water, and the whole pattern holds up well in both dirty and clear conditions.
How to fish:
Fish it under an indicator or a large dry fly as part of a two-fly setup. It’s especially effective in high or off-color water, after rain, or anytime worms might be dislodged into the current.
